Are Lynchburg Restaurants Safe? A Four Part Series

More than 54 billion meals are served at 844,000 commercial food establishments in the United States each year:

(1) 46% of the money Americans spend on food goes for restaurant meals.

(2) On a typical day, 44% of adults in the United States eat at a restaurant.

(3) Of a mean 550 foodborne disease outbreaks reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention each year from 1993 through 1997, less than 40% were attributed to commercial food establishments.

(4) Preventing restaurant-associated foodborne disease outbreaks is an important task of public health departments.

This was reported by the Center for Disease Control. They also state that only about 30 percent of the foodborne diseases are actually reported.

So how does Lynchburg fare in this battle against foodborne diseases? We will answer this question and also show over the next four days responses from the FDA and the Virginia Health Department. There will be some surprising revelations, some misconceptions laid to rest, and most importantly, the question will be answered are Lynchburg restaurants safe?
