Valentine Versus Harrington: On the Issues

Democrat Shannon Valentine and Republican Mike Harrington are vying for the 23rd District Delegate seat. Voting turnout is expected to be low, only enough ballots for 1/3 of the registered voters in Lynchburg are ordered. The special election will be held next Tuesday.

Tonight at 7 pm at the Court Street Baptist Church a forum will be held and they will field questions from the public on the issues.

So far, on the issues here are how the candidates stand:

On Education:

Harrington: is in favor of a fully funded Virginia educational system.
Valentine: supports the Kaine platform for a 4 year old pre-K program.

On Crime:

Harrington: supports denial of voting rights to felons and for additional classes of felons.
Valentine: supports restoring voting rights for non-violent non-repetitive felons.

On the Marriage Amendment:

Harrington: Supports the proposed amendment that marriage is defined as union between a man and a woman.
Valentine: Favors the idea that marriage is defined as a union of a man and a women, but disagrees with the language of the amendment that removes rights between same sexed people who live together.

On Law suits:

Both Harrington and Valentine agree that controls need to be put on frivolous lawsuits.

We encourage you to attend the last two forums the one tonight at 7pm at the Court Street Baptist Church, and the next one is being held 7:30 am at the summit of Enterprise Drive.

We also encourage you to take an active role in voting, Tuesday. If you do not vote it is politics as usual in Lynchburg, were small focus groups determine your representation.
