Word of the Year Truthiness

The American Dialect Society has voted and have decided the best words of 2005.
Word of the Year

WINNER truthiness: the quality of stating concepts or facts one wishes or believes to be
true, rather than concepts or facts known to be true.

There are other words on the site that may interest you. Podcast made the cut, and as a reflection of a culture Tom Cruise had a whole category named after him called
Cruiselex.

Some of the winners and runners up are darn right funny and colorful such as:

whale tail: the appearance of thong or g-string underwear above the waistband
of pants, shorts, or a skirt. Also known as a longhorn.

and the runner up:

muffin top: the bulge of flesh hanging over the top of low-rider jeans.

But the most interesting and the winner Truthiness portrays a quality that I see everyday. The concept of believing something not because of the facts, but what you want to believe. It is both disturbing and enlightening and we can only hope for a reunification of mainstream truth with the facts.

Sargent Friday of Dragnet would agree, "I only want the facts Mame."
