Sundays are about Comfort Food

Some of my earliest memories are of Sunday after-church dinners at my grandmother's house. A hot summer day, a wood stove warmed up, and homemade biscuits, fried chicken, and all the goodies on the table. The entire family was there, and you could feel the love and happiness. Most of the food came from the farm: the chickens, the corn, the green beans. Although we kids didn't know it at the time, my grandparents spent a lot of time tending that farm throughout the hot summer.

Those fond memories of Sunday continue through my childhood. There was something special about the ritual of attending church and then gathering to eat that made most of the world seem like an extended family. We didn't have to do it -- in fact years later we started going to fast food restaurants after church on Sundays, but it wasn't the same.

So today as I get out the hamburger, tater-tots, and dishes and cook up a big pan of hamburger tater-tot casserole, even though it's not the same for me, I know it'll be the same for the kids.

Some traditions end, some die slowly, and some, like garden, just need a little love and care.
