Jemal Antonio Scott: Pleads Guilty to Drive By Shooting

From the Lynchburg's Prosecutors office:

On September 7, 2005, only minutes before a scheduled jury trial, 23-year old Jemal Antonio Scott pled guilty to 8 felony charges involving his participation in a drive-by shooting. The defendant pled guilty to 2 counts of Malicious Wounding, 2 counts of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, 2 counts of Shooting from a Motor Vehicle, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Maliciously Shooting at an Occupied Dwelling.

The facts of the case revealed that on October 13, 2004 at approximately 6:00 p.m., the defendant and Kevin Napier drove in front of 1003 Pierce Street with the intention of confronting the individuals on the front porch. The defendant fired multiple shots from a .22 caliber firearm in the direction of the people on the front porch. A total of between 4 to 6 shots were fired. 18-year old Jeremy Hubbard, who had been standing on the front porch, was shot in the foot and 19-year old Desmond Jackson, who had also been on the front porch, was shot in the back. After firing on the house, the defendant and Kevin Napier fled in their car down Pierce Street in the direction of 12th Street. The defendant was stopped by police 7 hours after the shooting in the same car that was used during the drive-by shooting. Police recovered a spent shell casing from a 9 mm firearm inside the car.

During an interview with police, the defendant admitted that he was the passenger in the vehicle during the drive-by shooting. Scott said that the driver was Kevin Dwayne Napier. Scott also admitted that he fired a .22 caliber firearm from the car in the direction of the people on the front porch hitting Jeremy Hubbard in the foot.

Circuit Court Judge Mosby G. Perrow, III, accepted the defendant's pleas of guilty to all 8 charges and announced that he would sentence the defendant on November 18, 2005 at 9:30 a.m. The defendant will remain incarcerated with no bond pending his sentencing hearing. The defendant faces a maximum possible sentence of 85 years in prison. Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Chuck Felmlee prosecuted the case for the Commonwealth.
