A Soldier

A Soldier

Remembering their sacrifice:
In Lynchburg there was a flag erected for every American soldier who had lost his life in Iraq. It was humbling to see many flags each with a name, a person with flesh and blood, who had sacrificed his life so that others may live in freedom. No matter what you think of the war and the politics, each one of these person died hoping to serve a higher and unselfish purpose, to preserve liberty.

Bus or Bike?

Bus or Bike?
Originally uploaded by LynchburgVirginia.
This is a character around town who is slightly off. You always see him with a bike. Rarely do you see him ride it he is always pushing it. Sometimes he will leave his bike anywhere. And how society is, they do sometimes disappear. But not to worry, anytime he loses his bike someone gives him another. He is not homeless but he is out during the day, and throughout the night. And can be seen in any part of the city.

For those of you that are still coming by, looks like the place is not as busy as it used to be!

I just wanted you all to know that I have posted recently on a cool new airplane proposed by DoD. I've also got some Star Trek news (with more on the way).

So if you get a chance, drop by and visit sometime!

Batteaux Going Down the James

In the 1800's, long wooden boats were "poled" in the treacherous, rocky waters of The James River, transporting other passengers and goods downriver from Lynchburg to Richmond. The passenger boats were known as "packets" while the poled boats transporting rye whiskey, hogsheads of tobacco, flour, and other trading products were known as "bateaux". Sluiceways and other evidence of this long forgotten activity may still be found while floating the river. from

Each year recreated batteaus drift down the James River to Richmond. Batteaus are old flat bottom river boats that use to run the tobacco trade from Lynchburg to Richmond. How do people get into this? Well, they just get together and build one.

Created with fd's Flickr Toys.

A set of pictures of these Bateaux can be found here:

Orchard Mountain Falls.

Orchard Mountain Falls.
Originally uploaded by LynchburgVirginia.
I made the venture up the Orchard Mountain Trail. It was a fun, but a hard hike all up hill. I was rewarded with some excellent views of the falls, and here is a picture of one part of the falls. It is a combination of 4 images, and has remained on the most interestingness page of Flickr for quite sometime. It has been rated as high as 20 out of a half million photos loaded to flickr each day.
