Alzheimer's linked to Diabetes

Alzheimer's is one of the worst afflictions known to man. Not just because it robs us of people like Charlton Heston and Ronald Reagan (who knows what President Reagan might have accomplished in his twilight years), but because it robs us of our moms, dads, aunts, uncles and friends. It cuts at the very heart of who we are.

I have a dear friend whose grandmother is in the final stages of Alezheimer's and he tells me that his grandmother doesn't know him 99 percent of the time. I watched the movie The Notebook and was touched and saddened by this disease's legacy.

Now, a study shows that Alzheimer's may be a third type of Diabetes. Fox News is reporting:

Researchers found that insulin and the cells that process it in the brain drop sharply in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. They also found that insulin levels continue to decline as the disease progresses and becomes more severe.

One can only hope that this is a major breakthrough with this dreaded disease and that scientists will be able to find a way to control it or better yet to obliterate it. Since diabetes is related to insulin and insulin is related to sugar intake, could it have been President Reagan's love of jelly beans that contributed to the loss of his memories? One day we may know the answer to that question.
