Lynchburg Grows: Urban Farming

After seeing the damage vandals caused to the 100 year old Lynchburg Grows greenhouses on WSET. I called the number for a request for volunteers, asking when I could help. Then I was told part of the story, of what Lynchburg Grows is about. It is about urban farming, helping the disadvantaged, and helping keep The Daily Bread stocked with fresh vegetables. The vandals caused thousands of dollars of damage.

This is from Historic Garden Day at St. Paul's:

"...an exciting new organization in Lynchburg, Lynchburg Grows. Lynchburg Grows is a not-for-profit corporation with the goal of helping all disadvantaged persons enjoy the healthy benefits of gardening and having access to such spaces. Among the programs they support are the "Roots and Shoots" gardens, an intergenerational gardening program focusing on at risk inner-city youth, and Lynchburg's Urban Farm, a 6.5 acre tract with 9 greenhouses that they are seeking to purchase to be used as a site for job training for disabled and disadvantaged individuals."

Lynchburg Grows is seeking help to clean up the mess, this coming Saturday starting at 9AM. They can be reached at 846-5665
